It was during his tenure as Chief System Engineer that Andre Meredith became interested in drones, and embarked on a process which eventually culminated in the completion of a Master of Science in Engineering degree at the University of Stellenbosch with research into the feasibility of utilising large unmanned aircraft systems for long range maritime search and rescue.

His fascination with drones continued into his tenure as Chief Certification Officer, where he (and his team of engineers) oversaw the certification of various military air systems destined for SAAF operational employment, as well as many military air systems being developed by South African Defence Industry. It was here where he started developing the essential skills required for safety oversight and certification of military drones.
